DIRECTORE OF PARKS, RECREATION & ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS
The Directorate of Parks, Recreation & Environmental Affairs is one of the providers of services in the Lilongwe City Council and as the name suggests is responsible for availability and maintenance of Parks for both passive and active Recreation.
Provision of Parks involves the construction of areas where there is an atmosphere under natural or artificial structures where the citizens can use as a form of relaxation either actively, where they participate in the activities going on or passively – where people will just sit back and watch while other activities of a recreational nature unfold.
MR A.P PHALULA ( THE ACTING DIRECTOR OF PARKS, RECREATION & ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS )
Lilongwe City having been developed under the theme of “THE GARDERN CITY of Malawi” created the Directorate of Parks, Recreation and Environmental Affairs to be responsible for:
Protection, creation, rehabilitation and maintenance and the Biodiversity within the Lilongwe City Council Jurisdiction. This is done through 5 sections that exist within the directorate namely.
I. FORESTRY SECTION
Headed by an Assistant Director, assisted by two Supervisors.
- Responsible for Forestry Production
- Responsible for Forestry Maintenance
Two foremen work each under the supervisors and have direct link to the workers at each site of operation either in production or in maintenance. Then follows the various work gangs who are responsible for the physical work of ensuring all necessary activities are executed.
II. NURSERY SECTION
Headed by an Assistant Director responsible for production of all Horticultural productions required for the process of proving plant material for:
- Beautifying the city scape through the provision of flowers and shrubs.
- Improvement of nutritional needs of the citizens through the provision of fruits and vegetables.
- Provision of plant materials for disposal to the public through its sales point at cost recovery prices.
- Offering train courses for gardens where necessary to inculcate into the citizens the spirit of love for the natural resources and all biodiversity.
III. CONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT SECTION
Responsible for making sure that all products from the nursery are used in the field to create enclaves of beauty through the landscaping of the various public undeveloped open sites hence the development of recreation Parks, beauty spots like roundabouts, roadside flower and shrub points, at the same time landscape of premises, public or private on hire. Also responsible for floral decorations at all public national functions and/or private functions on hire.
